Coursera is an online course provider that offers 4000 courses from about 150 universities. The teaching and learning team at Coursera was tasked with ensuring quality content production for these clients. Coursera needed Learning Design Consulting Services to achieve this, including curriculum design sessions, onboarding workshops, answering instructional design questions, and reviewing the course content. As a strategic EdTech partner, Eiffel Corp supported Coursera with this process. The outcomes led to the successful delivery of learning design workshops and consultations and contributed to Coursera achieving the highest competency ratings on client experience surveys.

As a proudly South African university, UJ strives to contribute to the development of the African continent through higher education. Therefore, the University of Johannesburg required online course development of Faculty Specific Modules within the New Student Orientation Programme. Accordingly, UJ approached Eiffel Corp to assist with the online course development of Faculty Specific Modules within the New Student Orientation Programme, to ensure the look and feel of the courses are consistent and professional throughout.

THE CHALLENGE

African institutions of higher learning, technical & professional training face a significant challenge in helping to address the glaring skills deficit many nations in the region are experiencing. To help students overcome some of these challenges, the University of Johannesburg required online course development of Faculty Specific Modules within the New Student Orientation Programme.

THE SOLUTION

Eiffel Corp’s team of Instructional Designers to assist with the online course development of Faculty Specific Modules within the New Student Orientation Programme for an optimal learning experience. The development included the design and implementation of course banners, icon deployment and standardisation, and visual improvements, corrections and fixes where required.

THE RESULTS

The content provided by the University of Johannesburg content authors was assessed for its suitability in respect of accepted instructional design practices to ensure it aligns with the outcomes and aims of the learning programme. During this process, active client and partner involvement was crucial to ensure the outcomes met expectations. As a result of the process, the look and feel of the modules are consistent and professional throughout, contributing to a consistent and impactful learning experience.

UNIVEN - FROM BLACKBOARD TO DIGIKAMVA LMS

Based on the limitations and costs of Blackboard (premium LMS), Univen had to consider the next steps to ensure a more feasible platform that addresses the needs, is affordable and delivers in terms of reporting and analytics. In order to tackle these challenges, a team was appointed to research the various options available on the market. Eiffel Corp’s Digikamva LMS was chosen as the new platform for MyUniven, due to the available information on institutions with similar challenges and the level of implementation.

THE CHALLENGE

UNIVEN’s existing LMS was used in the context of a blended learning scenario. Still, the cost-benefit analysis was not proving to be viable, especially due to the dollar-based maintenance license. In addition, the reporting of the existing LMS was too limited, and additional money had been spent on reporting tools for more detailed analytics. The LMS was also not being used optimally by all lecturers due to varying levels of skills and experience in digital teaching and learning.

THE SOLUTION

Eiffel Corp was identified as a suitable third party with a solution in Digikamva LMS. It is a cloud based solution offering a robust, flexible and scalable open-source platform. Eiffel Corp, a credible, trustworthy partner with a good relationship and track record with the institution, also offered support services relevant to the needs of UNIVEN.

THE RESULTS

Risks were identified in advance and addressed to facilitate a smooth transition. The migration from Blackboard LMS to MyUniven powered by Digikamva LMS and the migration of all courses from Blackboard LMS to Digikamva LMS, without disrupting the day-to-day teaching, was very successful. This resulted in improved functionality and use of the LMS. Change Management facilitated the process and buy-in from stakeholders.

Fairmont High School prioritises offering its learners an opportunity to develop themselves through strong academic, cultural, sporting and leadership activities. Therefore, Fairmont needed a system that would be effective in keeping a record of all information regarding learners and their performance. Their previous admin system did not allow for multiple-user access, which was time-consuming and created complex challenges. However, Staffroom provided an all-in-one system solution, centralising all information about the learners and parents in one place 

THE CHALLENGE

Fairmont High School’s previous student admin system did not allow multiple-user access. This meant they had to enter all marks for all learners in a very short time frame. It also meant that student information was only readily available to some staff members. In addition, they could only access the system from one computer in the school building. This was time-consuming and created very challenging deadlines to meet.

THE SOLUTION

Staffroom offers effective accessibility with easy online web-based delivery enabling availability anytime, anywhere, & on any device. Simple workflows make administration, assessments and reporting easy and efficient while saving teachers time and effort. The Staffroom SIS (Student Information System) supplied solutions to Fairmont High School’s challenges through modules. The Infobase module provided an organised format for the student, parent and staff information allowing the parent and students to be linked to each other.

THE RESULTS

Fairmont High School has walked the Staffroom journey for the past nine years and they haven’t looked back. What they like about the product is that it’s an admin-saver enabling teachers to interact from any device, anywhere, to get the job done. In addition, parents can track learners’ academic records throughout the term while being provided with a solid communication platform. Finally, a significant positive for Fairmont is Staffroom’s excellent support channel with quick feedback and  continuous development.

STAFFROOM ACCESSIBILITY
FOR CLAREMONT HIGH SCHOOL

Claremont High School is an innovative Western Cape Education Department (WCED) school which strives to create an enabling and challenging environment focused on producing outstanding academic performance among pupils from backgrounds which do not typically allow access to the best quality education. They needed their information to be centralised and software that allows them to be able to access files from anywhere. The solution for their needs was Staffroom Accessibility which provided easy, online web-based delivery enabling availability anytime, anywhere, & on any device.

THE CHALLENGE

Information was not centralised – different files for student, parent and staff data, including email addresses, phone numbers, and student information. Claremont High School had to use an intranet to access a file to capture marks but had to be on the school premises to do so.

THE SOLUTION

Staffroom’s Infobase Module centralised all the information for student, parent and staff data kept on profiles which are easy to access and use for reports and communications. Having Staffroom allows users to be off-site to access all the data and capture marks for reporting purposes. This has made our teachers’ jobs easier and allowed us to accomplish our tasks more quickly. 

THE RESULTS

With Staffroom Claremont High is now able to access marksheets when they are not at school, unlike pre-Staffroom when they had them on a networked drive which required being in the building. They have centralised their marksheets from all the subjects. accessing student, staff and parent information has become quick and easy.

AN INTEGRATED SOFTWARE SUITE
FOR THE SETTLERS HIGH SCHOOL

The Settlers High School has been acknowledged as a leading school in the Allan Gray Circle of Excellence. At Settlers, they believe in a balanced approach to education, focusing on our four pillars of Academics, Sport, Pastoral Care and Culture, and it prides itself on offering wonderful opportunities for all who attend the school. However, they struggled to administer student, parent, and staff information effectively. To solve this, The Settlers High School partnered with Staffroom, an integrated software suite that helps your school collect, store and share all the information about learners, parents and staff.

THE CHALLENGE

The school could not administer student, parent, and staff information effectively. For an overall profile of the students, it was difficult to be able to get a complete overview to assess the student’s progress and intervene should the student have needed it. Capturing marks to CEMIS at times problematic in a sense of not being able to confirm calculations and results.

THE SOLUTION

The Staffroom SIS (Student Information System) supplied solutions to Settlers High School challenges in the form of modules. The Infobase module supplied an organized format for the student, parent and staff information allowing the parent and students to be linked to each other. The Infobase, Assess and Insight modules in Staffroom allowed for the exporting and printing of documents with student and parent information that can be submitted to the WCED.

THE RESULTS

Since using Staffroom, The Settlers High School has been able to record and store all the student information in one place, cutting down on the use of paper and files as information is stored on the system and can be shared effortlessly. They can communicate easily with parents and learners, and communication between the school and parent is kept under the profile of a learner which is also great for intervention record keeping.
